I use The United States Postal Service (USPS) for shipping.

Wood is heavy.

Sometimes, for a small order, shipping is greater than the product itself.

I don't put a minimum on orders.

If you order small slices, it still requires a box and packing material.  I don't require a minimum order amount as of now, but I might in the future.

But, since the USPS determines shipping calculations on "zones" and according to weight,  I bought a new shopping cart to help me out.  It has not been an easy task setting it up.  I weigh each piece of wood, and when there are many pieces, I average out the weights.  The weights are some how calculated into the cost of shipping with a direct API to USPS.    I try to recycle boxes, but most likely I have to somehow buy all different sizes of boxes to ship my products.   So I think it's fair if you, the customer, help pay for the hundreds of dollars I pay just for boxes.  One customer might order 200 pieces, and another might order 5 pieces.  I have to have  all different sized boxes available to ship it.

If shipping is over what you paid, I issue a refund.

If anyone wants me to use a different shipper, extra charges will apply since I will have to drive to town to drop off the packages.  I don't have a regular way to print out the labels.  I will have to go to town for that.   I do not have regular pick-up scheduled with UPS of FedEx.  26 mile trip for me.

I try to get all packages ready to ship by 11:30am (weekdays) so that they can be picked up by the USPS  mailman.  This will save me a special trip to town.   If it is after 11:30am the package will be shipped the following day.  Anyone requesting one-day shipping must get their order in by about 10am in order for the post office to receive it in time to guarantee next day delivery.

Any order received after 11am Friday,  Saturday or Sunday will be shipped the following Monday.

Hopefully the new shopping cart system will alleviate shipping questions and problems.

I DO NOT PROVIDE QUOTES FOR SHIPPING CHARGES.

Why, you ask?

Because it is impossible for me to accurately calculate the weight of the wood product until it is cut and packaged.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions for you to review:

When Are Shipments Made? During weekdays, I try to get all packages ready to ship before 11:00am, as then the mailman can pick them up, saving me a trip to town.   The mailman usually gets here around 11:30am.   If I miss the mailman, packages will be shipped the following day, unless someone has requested and paid for one-day shipping on an order, in which case I will personally drive to town to deliver the package to the post office in time so that the customer receives it the next day.   Any orders received after 10am on Friday, or Saturday and Sunday will be shipped the following Monday.
How is shipping Calculated? Now that I have the shopping cart installed on my website, there is a direct API to the USPS website which automatically calculates the shipping cost according to weight and USPS distance zones.

For custom orders, I can only calculate the final shipping cost after a specific custom order is cut, packaged, and weighed. If it fits into a Flat Rate box that's good.  If it doesn't, it depends on distance, weight, and package dimensions.  Small orders may fit into a bubble envelope.

Why is shipping so high?

or

Why did I receive a refund for shipping?
I know.  I don't like it either.  If you think that you are unable to afford shipping costs, please do not place a custom order. Actual shipping on a 17 pound package might cost around $19 on a $25 order.    That's why I try to use the USPS Flat Rate Boxes as much as possible so that we both know what shipping costs will be in advance.

Because of the nature of wood, and different weights, sometimes the shopping cart can't figure out how many slices of wood will fit into one box.   The vast combinations of wood species, diameters, thicknesses, etc., would be virtually impossible to enter into a database so that the shopping cart can accurately calculate the actual shipping cost to your zip code, because the actual piece of wood shipped may not be exact.   When I cut wood slices, I weigh each piece, average out the weights and enter that average weight into the shopping cart.

I manually package each order, and do my best to package them so that you pay the least amount of postage.    If I find that you over paid for shipping charges I will issue a refund to you immediately after I print the shipping label.
Why do you use USPS and not UPS or FedEx? USPS provides free pick-up of flat-rate boxes.  UPS and Fed-Ex charge extra for all pick-ups. I am not a regular shipper. Even though USPS shipping fees seem very expensive, I have found that they are generally cheaper than UPS and FedEx. USPS also provides free flat rate boxes at no charge which I use when I can.  The fewer costs I have to incur the better for my customers.
Why can't you pre-calculate shipping costs on custom orders? Because no two pieces of wood are the same, and no two custom orders are alike.   There are also packaging and handling costs involved that may have to be calculated.
What if, after you are done cutting my custom order I find that I cannot afford shipping? You should definitely stop wasting my time.
How do I pay? For custom orders, I will send you a Pay Pal invoice by email.  Custom orders require 50% down to start the job, and the remaining 50% plus shipping to ship.

All other on-line orders are paid through Pay-Pal through my shopping cart.  You do not need to have a PayPal account to check-out.  The cost of the wood, shipping, and taxes (if you live in Minnesota) will all be automatically calculated.  You can pay with any credit or debit card, or e-check.  You do need to make sure that your billing address that you type into the shopping cart is the same that is listed on your credit/debit card.  You can chose a different shipping address if you would like.
Do you require a down payment? All future custom orders will be required to pay 50% down, and 50% plus shipping before your order is shipped.
Can I pick up my order? Certainly.  Please make arrangements with me first. I also have a full time job driving an 18-wheeler.  I am not always here.  My schedule changes frequently.  Contact me by email or call the office or cell phone to get driving directions.  I am located in Carlton, Minnesota.
You told me that my order will probably fit into a large flat rate box.  Why are you charging me for Parcel Post Shipping? The key word here is "probably".  As much as I depend on my experience in shipping wood, guess what, I'm not perfect. The Post Office won't accept a flat rate box that is bulging out at the top or sides.  If I can't cram your order into a Flat Rate Box, I have no alternative but to ship it Parcel Post.   Wood doesn't bend to fit the box.  I quote prices for my product.  I never quote a price for shipping.  On the other hand, your order might fit into a smaller box also.  I has been my experience that the cost between Flat Rate Boxes and Parcel Post is minimal.
But the shipping charge cuts into my costs and profits.  What can you do to make this more affordable. I suggest that you increase the price of your product to reflect the actual cost of materials and shipping, like most businesses must do.  I do not sell wholesale, however I will offer discounts to larger orders.
I have a deadline and really need to have some 15" slices by the end of this week. I cut orders first come, first served, unless you just happen to be lucky enough to request the same size log and cut that I am currently working on.   If your order can be worked in on a "rush" basis, there will be an additional "rush" fee which will be between $10 and $25 depending upon the order size and time frame and 50% down will be required for me to expedite your order.  I don't make a habit of doing this.  My #1 priority is to fill orders for customers who have planned ahead, communicate well,  and have been patiently waiting for me to fill their orders.  What's that old saying.....Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part?  Something like that!
Will you be having pre-packaged small slices in the future? Yes.  But better yet, you can now order any quantity you want, up to the amount I have available.
How can I try to figure out what the shipping charges will be on my own? You can click on one of the products in the wood shop, enter in a quantity, and see what it says for weight and shipping cost on the check-out page.

Or you can add a product to the shopping cart, enter in your zip code, and it will tell you what the actual shipping charge will be.
I just need a few pieces.  How will they be shipped? It depends on the size. If you are ordering just a few very small slices they may fit into a bubble envelope.  If you are ordering a few 12" slices they will be boxed and weighed. See above.
