Poplar

Sample Size: Approx. 3"- 4"

A very light colored and soft wood.  Bark retains more often than other species, and wood does not crack as much as pine or birch. Available in sizes as small as a twig, up to about 15" when in stock.

Birch

Sample Size: Approx. 3"- 4"

More character than poplar, but a harder wood.  Birch has sever layers of white colored bark that is paper thin.  Birch slices can be ordered from about 1" in diameter up to about 7 - 8" in diameter and cut from 1/4" thick to as thick as you need. Thicker slices are used for displays, candle holders, etc.  Thin slices are used for tree ornaments, medallions, and other craft projects.

Small Pine

Sample Size: Approx."3 - 4"

Beautiful soft wood with character.  Bark has a tendency to chip off with age.  Wood cracks easily when variations is humidity occur, especially the very large slices.  Available in small twig sizes or up to about 25" in diameter.

Balmagilead

BASSWOOD ROUNDS

I do not have Basswood available.  Click the above link to find some.  If you need a thin slice that won't crack, basswood is the answer.

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR WOOD PRODUCTS

I do not have basswood.  I can only provide wood that is native to Minnesota.   The wood species I have available are:

If you are looking for a large diameter slice that is very thin for painting, decoupage, drawing or woodburning, I recommend using basswood.  Even though I cannot provide basswood slices, I do have a link to Amazon where you can get it.  Please click here to see basswood rounds.  These are made by Walnut Hollow, and are very affordable.  Their basswood slices are kiln dried, sanded, and won't crack and check like pine logs do.

Most log slices will split (check) eventually due to expansion and contraction from humidity and climate changes. (Nothing to do with Al Gore!) Sometimes you can incorporate the crack into your project.  Checking can be minimized if the slice is properly sealed, but there are no guarantees that checking can be prevented entirely.  I have been experimenting with a new process to minimize cracking of slices, and so far it is looking very promising.  I will keep you posted.....

Pine does not normally retain it's bark.  It chips off during the cutting process, and eventually separates from the wood as it ages.

Slices that are cut very thin, 1/4 - 1/2", also may lose their bark during the cutting process, depending upon what species of wood is being cut, and how dry it is.

Recommendations for large log slices is table tops, chairs, butcher blocks, head "stones", etc., where the log will be sliced fairly thick.  You should plan for checking to occur in your projects, and incorporate it into your rustic plan.

Keep in mind that large, thick slices of logs are very heavy and shipping charges may be high.

Any log or branch can be sliced either straight or at any angle you wish.

If you need a special burl, knot, crotch of a tree, please specify.

Logs and branches can be ripped lengthwise into flat boards of any thickness.  These slices can be used for signs, table tops, shelves.

Logs and branches can be cut in half, quartered, or cut into small strips lengthwise and can be used for picture frames, furniture borders, trim, and many other projects.
