WOOD PRESERVATIVES

I received many calls and emails from customers who have just acquired a couple of wood slices from a fallen tree in their yard, and are wondering how to preserve it so that they can make a table top, sign, or something out of the gorgeous wood.

The larger the slice is, the more susceptible it is to cracking.  What happens is as the wood dries, water evaporates from the cells of the wood and shrinkage occurs.  When the wood starts shrinking, it pulls and usually splits from the pith (center) of the wood, or some types of wood, like oak, will start cracking on the outside edges.

Pentacryl softens the wood cells so that they do not crack when drying.  The wood doesn't shrink as much, and is very helpful in keeping the bark on, however sometimes the wood will do what it wants anywyay.

Wood Preservative Pentacryl For Log Slices and Wood TurningPentacryl is a revolutionary new product that combats the negative effects of drying by displacing water and moisture in the wood fibers.

Carving or turning green wood is certainly faster and easier than working with dry stock. But sometimes the extra work involved with slowly and carefully drying the wood to avoid checking hardly seems worth the trouble. Not any more! Pentacryl is a revolutionary new product that combats the negative effects of drying by displacing water and moisture in the wood fibers. Your wood will dry quicker and more evenly, and the Pentacryl residue even lubricates your tools as you work. This non-toxic solution doesn't stain the wood or affect finishing in any manner. The recommended method of application is total immersion, but the product can also be brushed or sprayed. Compared to the traditional wax coating method, you'll find the drying time reduced by as much as 90% with Pentacryl. On average, a green 6" x 6" x 2" bowl blank would absorb 2 ounces of solution, be fully saturated in a week, and, if turned thin, dry in about three weeks.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW PENTACRYL WORKS ON BIRCH

Click on either of the above photos to see a bigger photo.

The birch slice on the left was cut this past winter and left to air dry without treatment.

The slice on the right was cut and treated almost a year ago.

You can see that both the bark and inner bark are separating from the untreated slice,

while the bark on the treated slice is very intact, and almost looks as though it was a fresh cut.

Treatment somewhat darkens the wood, but  after the wood is sanded, it looks like untreated wood.

Woodworker's Guide to Wood, Book
WoodworkerThis book is less an encyclopedia of wood species, and more a practical guide to working with the intrinsic variation and "knottiness" of the woodworker's chosen medium. It's chock-full of sensible advice on milling, grading and selecting wood, "reading the grain," working with defects, drying and storing wood, and even extensive techniques for working with veneers and green wood. And of course, it wouldn't be complete without a full-color photographic wood directory. 160 pages.
