For those of you who need a quick and easy project to make for gift giving, you should consider a wood mosaic project.

What can you make with wood mosaics, you ask?

(click on any of the graphics to see a larger version).

Apply wood mosaics to:

  • Picture, mirror and photo frames

  • Drawer fronts and cabinet doors

  • Headboardsbirch bark and twig picture frame

  • Lamps and lamp shades

  • Switch plates

  • Walls

  • Table tops and table edging

  • Molding around windows and doors, or wall applicationsWood Mosaic Coffee Table In Living Room Hand Made By Sandy at Rustic Woodworking.com

  • Anything that you can apply mosaic pieces to can be dramatically changed to a "rustic" project.

  • See some sample lay-out patterns below.

You can add other elements to make a perfect little nature scene, like birds, deer, moose, flowers, moss, pine cones, etc. Working with wood mosaic seldom requires many tools, and your pieces can usually be trimmed easily with a pruning shear.  And most of the time, nailing is not required, as typically a hot glue gun can be used.

You can obtain many wood backgrounds to apply your mosaic parts to, at garage sales, dollar stores, Salvation Army stores, and Goodwill stores.  Get an old coffee table, an old wood head board, or anything that interests you.  Old wooden picture fames are almost a dime a dozen, but after you apply your mosaic pieces to it, you could sell it for 10 times what you paid for the old wood frame.

We have just added some unfinished blank pine boxes and other stuff that you can use to decorate and apply your wood mosaic pieces with.  People love receiving home-made gifts like this.

Types of wood and cuts:

Pine

Bark varies depending on age and width of twig and angle of cut.

Birch

Bark is most noticeable when cut at an angle.  Very young, small diameter twigs do

not have the white paper bark.

Red Dogwood

Great for borders and accent pieces for mosaic work.

Specify which, species, cut, and size that you want for your wood mosaic projects.  Birch log slices are also available.
