Make a rustic checkerboard!

Perfect for a rainy day at the cabin.........

Make a checkers game board out of whatever type of wood you like, or a large slice of a log. If you have room to leave the board out, you could make a small board table by attaching some logs or branches for legs using a tenon cutter. Paint, burn, or stain the game squares onto the game board. Use your imagination. Just be sure that the squares fit your game pieces. There are a total of 64 squares on a checkerboard, 8 rows of 8 squares with alternate colored squares. Click on the graphic above to see a larger version of a log slice checkerboard.

For the game pieces, make two sets of 12 small round slices. Each set should be a different color. Use sliced branches as the checkers, or you could slice up some wooden dowels if you want them to all be the same diameter. To differentiate the checkers, you could stain them with different colored stains, as the end grain will really absorb the stain color. Other options to differentiate the opponent pieces could be to use two different species of wood, wood- burn on a logo or graphic, or stencil or paint different designs. Don't forget to sign your project.
