Just be sure that the squares fit your game pieces. There are a total of 64 squares on
a checkerboard, 8 rows of 8 squares with alternate colored squares.

For the game pieces, make two sets of 12 small round slices. Each
set should be a different color.
Use sliced branches as
the checkers, or you could slice up some wooden dowels if you want
them to all be the same diameter. To differentiate the
checkers, you could stain them with different colored stains, as the end grain will really absorb the stain color. Other
options to differentiate the opponent pieces could be to use two
different species of wood,
wood- burn on a logo or graphic, or stencil or paint different designs.
