I have been addicted to building things out of twigs, branches and logs since I can remember. That's a long time, since I am over 53 now.
A twig might just look like brush or a burden to most people, but to me they are future projects, and I have a hard time throwing them in the "heap" to burn or decay.
My first major project, the "all purpose tree stand", which I made back in 1979 when I had very few tools, know-how, or space for anything. I just drew a cartoon to sum it up.
If you want to see this cartoon a little bigger, click on it and the full size graphic will come up. I drew this years ago after building the tree stand.
I have been designing and working with wood, twigs, branches & logs since 1979. It is a true passion of mine. Almost every stick, branch, or log has potential in my eyes. Even just looking down at a stick on the ground, a colorful leaf in fall, or something floating down the river, everything works somehow, and it is beautiful to me.
I have some great stories to tell about the "good" old days, way back before I had tools, or any space to work in. Living in an apartment back then, and even moving up to a 1958 trailer, I did lots of building in the middle of my living room.
A few yeas back I bought an old house in Carlton County, MN, and have been fixing on it ever since. Built in 1929. Lots of work to do.
I used to be a secretary. Believe it or not. An administrative assistant for an investment firm in Madison, Wisconsin. I wore dresses and nylons and everything, but I still drove my motorcycle to work. I took stenography back before computers, and my last civil service job application test clocked me in at typing 99wpm, with 7 errors. My brother took me for a ride in his Big Rig, and when the company in Madison that I worked for got sold, I went to the Sun Prairie Diesel Truck Driving School, and have worn jeans ever since.
I have been slowly working on building up the Rustic Woodworking business.
My "real" job is driving an 18-wheeler, which I have been doing since 1989. For about the first 11 years I drove long-haul to all 48 states and Canada, mostly pulling a refrigerated trailer, hauling groceries and produce.
The love
of my life, Little Doggie, was my co-driver, and road with
me in the truck until I landed a local driving job. Little Doggie
passed away last year at the age of 17, and I miss him dearly.
Now, driving locally, my schedule changes frequently. Sometimes I will start working at 1am, and the next day I might at 6pm. One thing certain about truck driving is that there is nothing certain. The great benefit of driving locally is that I always get to sleep in my own bed (instead of a sleeper berth in the truck), and shower in my own shower instead of a filthy truck stop.
I do,
however, still manage to work on the house, drive a truck, and still
cut custom wood for my customers. The addition of the new shop
should really help me to get organized.
Some of my other passions are gardening, fishing, and working on the computer. I also maintain my own website, create and edit all of my own graphics, and have published a couple of videos on YouTube.
